Crime Prevention Tips - Vandalism
What is Vandalism? Vandalism is a action involving deliberate destruction of or damage to public or private property.
How to prevent vandalism in the neighbourhood.
1) Keep your property under lock and key. Install a security alarm with a connection to a security company, if necessary. Leaving your valuables unlocked welcomes thieves and others who are looking to damage property. If you have a large business, consider having a live, 24-hour security guard on duty.
2) Many vandals are reluctant to approach property that has good lighting. Similarly, if camera surveillance is used, vandals are less likely to risk being identified by the police. Install good lighting and consider investing in a video camera to monitor your property.
3) Use special materials in building and construction materials for your property. Break-proof glass and fencing can prevent certain types of vandalism. In addition, certain surfaces and materials do not permit spray paint to adhere and therefore discourage graffiti.
4) If you become the victim of vandalism, contact the police immediately. Take pictures of the vandalism and ask the police to conduct an investigation. Clean up all signs of vandalism so that the vandals do not find it easy to return to the scene.
